Based on an appointment today with one of (she has many) her surgeons today. He wants to add a 2nd procedure. However, as we weighed the pros and cons of when to do it, we decided on next Monday 8/8, which ends up being before the 1st surgery (go figure)
the following is an email I sent to our anesthesiologist today…yes, we know her enough to have her email, and home phone number…
Dr Kruger,
I know…you were hoping there wouldn’t be an update, right?
However, here is what is going on recently. SHE IS HEALTHY & HAPPY, crawling everywhere as well as up the stairs…but a recent swallow study on June 30 showed she is still aspirating, and that her nissen (Dr. Yoder did this on June 1, 2010) is already failed. Her Pulmonologist (Dr. Guarine) and her GI (Dr. Stathos) felt she was at risk of aspirating her reflux.
We (on the suggestion of Dr. Stathos) met with Dr. Rothenberg today. He feels we need to re-do her nissen. However, here is the caveat we have been faced with.
1. We add his hour long procedure to an already 4 hour surgery (PET replacement, Dr. Poz/ABR, audiologist/Palate repair and lip revision, Dr. Folk)
2. We do it at separate times
a. Before? August 8th
b. After? 6+ weeks post op
I asked him point blank “if this was your child, what would you choose?”
He opted for next week, prior to the big surgery for a couple of reasons
· Taking care of the issue/concern right away as to not risk aspiration of reflux
· Time to adjust to the nissen prior to mouth reconstruction
· Not taking the risk of ruining the palate repair
That said, we are on his schedule for next Monday, August 8th at 11 AM. We have requested you as well, we will see if your schedule is open.
My question for you is…and I know we have talked about this in the past…are YOU okay with Hannah undergoing anesthesia 2x…with one week in between? Dr. Rothenberg said he was ok with this.
